Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor in a tense standoff with Mordred at the dig site, threatening him to force Morgaine to recall the Destroyer. Morgaine, observing remotely, dismisses the threat as a bluff, prompting Mordred to challenge the Doctor's resolve. The Brigadier intervenes, aiming his revolver at Mordred, which causes Morgaine to warn Mordred about the Brigadier's violent past. The Brigadier then directly threatens Morgaine, demanding she leave his world or he will kill Mordred. Morgaine, seemingly indifferent, tells Mordred to 'die well,' and orders her forces to launch a full-scale, no-quarter attack on the dig site. A chaotic battle erupts, with Bambera and Ancelyn fighting bravely. Amidst the chaos, the Doctor, Brigadier, and Mordred escape in Bessie. Simultaneously, at the Gore Crow Hotel, Morgaine attempts to seize Excalibur from Ace, but is thwarted by the protective circle and the sword itself. The Destroyer then reveals its presence, asserting its power and its desire for freedom, stating it is chained by Morgaine with silver. As green energy explosions begin inside the hotel, the Doctor rushes back, concerned for Ace and Shou Yuing. This act establishes the immediate threat of Morgaine's forces and the Destroyer, setting the stage for the escalating conflict.

Act 2

Following the hotel's partial destruction, the Doctor, Ace, and Shou Yuing emerge from the rubble, having given Excalibur to Morgaine to save themselves. The Doctor, prioritizing his companions' safety over the artifact, deems this a wise decision. Discovering an 'interstitial vortex,' the Doctor and Brigadier venture through it to the castle where Morgaine is located, leaving Ace to follow with a plan involving silver. At the castle, the Destroyer reveals its cunning, admitting to the Doctor that it manipulated Morgaine to gain access, thus forcing its own release. The Brigadier's attempts to stop the Destroyer with conventional firearms prove futile, and he is violently thrown from the castle. Ace arrives, providing a crucial distraction that allows the Doctor to retrieve Excalibur. Despite the Doctor's warnings, Morgaine, under pressure from the Destroyer, breaks the silver chains, fully unleashing the ancient entity. Mordred then appears, confronting Morgaine with accusations of treachery and abandonment. In the ensuing emotional exchange, Morgaine and Mordred vanish through a gateway, leaving the Doctor, Ace, and the Brigadier to face the monstrous Destroyer. Believing himself more expendable, the Brigadier heroically sacrifices himself by incapacitating the Doctor and confronting the Destroyer alone, preparing for a final, desperate stand.

Act 3

The Brigadier, against all odds, defeats the Destroyer by firing silver bullets into its exposed chest, causing a massive explosion that reduces the castle to ruins. The Doctor and Ace, witnessing the destruction, initially believe the Brigadier to be dead, but he soon emerges, revealing he escaped the blast, much to the Doctor's relief and exasperation. Meanwhile, Morgaine, having escaped with Mordred, seizes control of a nuclear missile at a UNIT Mobile Command Post, intending to launch it. The Doctor confronts Morgaine, engaging her in a powerful, desperate plea against the horrors of indiscriminate nuclear war, describing the devastating consequences in vivid detail. His impassioned words sway Morgaine, who, at the last second, aborts the launch. Following this, the Doctor reveals the true fate of King Arthur – that he died long ago and was not merely sleeping – a revelation that deeply affects Morgaine. With the immediate threats neutralized, the Doctor incapacitates Mordred, and both he and Morgaine are taken into custody. In the aftermath, Excalibur is returned to its resting place, powering up the ancient spacecraft. The Brigadier, having faced down ultimate evil, decides to retire from active duty, returning home to his wife, Doris. The Doctor, Ace, and their remaining companions depart in Bessie, leaving the Brigadier to a well-deserved peace, while the Doctor reflects on the ongoing need for vigilance against future threats.
