This theme interrogates the limits of individual autonomy in a world ruled by an omnipotent external force: the Toymaker. Both Steven and Dodo’s repeated efforts to 'lead' or 'protect' are systematically neutralized by the Toymaker’s rules and traps, reducing them to pawns in his game. Even their emotional responses—Steven’s stoicism, Dodo’s panic—become predictable commodities for the Toymaker to exploit.
